Thanks, nix!

I often don't bother with the transphobic radfem types, because so many of them are fuelled by sheer hate, and well, when that's the case I'd rather go watch Emily take the piss than waste my own energy on trying to engage them. Still, with some of these people who are more based out of ignorance, I do try to take apart their stuff for the benefit of those who might be in a similar position.

thanks for this post. it's good to see these 'arguments' taken apart systematically, and their assumptions and logical . . . problems . . . exposed. i'm glad that people like you and lisa harney have the energy to provide such critiques, because i get about two paragraphs in and end up wanting to bash my head against the wall to relieve the pain.

[...] there’s better places to put that energy. Sometimes the particular bollocks being spouted deserves refuting, when it’s genuinely ignorant, but with the sort of blind hatred these people spout? [...]

zander: The person I was referring to above was a post-op transman. He was evidently allowed into the festival just fine.

belledame: She has - she mentioned it briefly in that post. I guess it's kind of a case of "well, *this* one is okay [because she has a human face]...but all the rest...they're still Other". Pretty odd, though.

The funny thing is, I'm fairly certain she has, or had, a partner who's a trans woman...

Hi Rebecca,

While I appreciate your comments and critiques, I want to disagree with your statement that transmen are WBW and therefore allowed entry into MichFest. Transmen are men assigned female at birth. Transmen who have changed their identity documents from F to M are no more welcome at MichFest than you are.

There are genderqueer people assigned female at birth who still attend MichFest, but they are not transmen. They are female-bodied masculine or androgynous people who retain their F status on their identity documents.

Since many transmen spent 10, 20, 30+ years in the lesbian community prior to transitioning, we are fully aware of the WBW policy at MichFest and would not challenge that policy, because we know how important woman-only space is. As a transman with an M on ALL of my identity documents and a face full of hair, I would not be let past the front gate of MichFest.

I find the WBW policy discriminatory towards transwomen and hope that they change it in the near future. And know that transmen are not turning their backs on transwomen. The people that appear to be transmen at MichFest are most likely not transmen at all, but genderqueer identified folks and/or really butch dykes and/or young bois/boyz (not transmen either, but boyish lesbians) and others.

The FTM community contains a multitude of identies, not just one (transman). There are dozens of different identities and transman is just one of them.
